Retained fire-fighters have completed an intensive three week recruits training course at the Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service’s training centre in Hacketstown. The firefighters will now join the Fire Services in counties Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Laois, Offaly and Tipperary.

Having been accepted into the training programme, the thirteen recruits have been learning the skills and knowledge necessary to be an effective team member of a modern fire & rescue service.
The recruits’ displayed some of their newly acquired firefighting skills at the parade, attended by Senior Fire Officers, Local Authority officials and representatives from each recruits’ Fire & Rescue Service.
Commenting on the firefighters training, Course Director and Carlow Assistant Chief Fire Officer Michael Gahan said “the recruits, and instructors have worked extremely hard throughout the course, and I am pleased with the very high standard that has been achieved”.
Addressing the recruit firefighters and those who gathered at the passing out parade, Carlow Chief Fire Officer Gerard W. Guerin, said “the recruits are now joining a disciplined organisation which has a long and proud history and tradition of public and local community service”. He also thanked the recruits and their families for their decision to join the fire & rescue service, and for their commitment to serve the communities in which they live.

The recruits received training in basic firefighting skills, ladder and pump drills, hydraulics, road traffic collisions, working at heights, legislation and health and safety at Carlow’s state of the art training facility in Hacketstown. The Centre was designed and developed to provide the necessary training and skills to meet the changing demands placed on firefighters attending emergency incidents across the country.
The passing out parade was attended by Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council Councillor Charlie Murphy, Acting Chief Executive of Carlow County Council, Mr. Dan McInerney, Chief Fire Officer Gerard W. Guerin, representatives of each recruits’ fire service, and the course instruction team, comprising Station Officer Nigel Corner (Kerry County Fire & Rescue Service), Station Officer Jamie Myler (Waterford City & County Fire & Rescue Service), and Sub. Station Officer Darrell Hayden (Carlow County Fire & Rescue Service).
