Northern Ireland Ambulance Service to assist Ireland’s National Ambulance Service

Ireland’s National Ambulance Service will be assisted by the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service when there are no resources available to the National Ambulance Service (NAS) for emergency calls in border areas.

The HSE has said it is also common practice when the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) have no resources to deal with such calls in the northern areas, they too will be provided with assistance from the NAS in a similar capacity.

158 ambulance staff comprising of paramedics, advanced paramedics and emergency medical technicians are currently operating in the North East regions of Cavan, Monaghan, Louth and Meath.

According to the Health Service Executive, the North East region currently has 26 emergency ambulances, 6 rapid response vehicles (RRV’s) and 5 officer-response vehicles (ORV’s).

LOUTH – Two ambulances are on Fridays to Sundays and three on Mondays and Thursdays in Dundalk. There are also two ambulances on nights from Mondays to Sundays and one ICV on days Mondays to Fridays. In Drogheda, there are two ambulances on days, Mondays to Sundays, and one ambulance on nights from Mondays to Sundays. Ardee has one ambulance on days, except for Mondays, and one ambulance on nights from Mondays to Sundays, with a further RRV on days from Mondays to Sundays and on nights, except on Thursdays.

MEATH – There are two ambulances on days and one on night from Mondays to Sundays in Navan while in Dunshaughlin, there is one ambulance on days, except Tuesdays, and one on nights.

CAVAN – Two ambulances are on days from Mondays to Sundays and one on nights from Mondays to Sundays, with one ICV on days from Mondays to Fridays in Cavan Town and in Virginia, one ambulance is on days, except Saturdays, and one is on nights from Mondays to Sundays.

MONAGHAN – Two ambulances are on days in Monaghan town, except on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when there is one, while there are two on nights from Mondays to Sundays. In Castleblayney, there is one ambulance on days, except on Saturday, and one on nights from Mondays to Sundays. There are two ICVs from Mondays to Fridays during the day and one during the day on Saturdays.

The National Ambulance Service has also said it will support and enhance community first responder schemes in conjunction with the Irish Heart Foundation, in particular within the North East area.
