No 'walk in the park' for Mountain Rescue Teams

by Emergency Times

Hill walkers who became injured after getting into difficulty on separate occasions over the bank holiday weekend required the assistance of Mountain Rescue Teams in the east and south eastern regions.

On Sunday afternoon a hill walker suffered leg injury while out walking with two friends on the Cullentragh Mountain. The alarm was raised and both the Dublin Wicklow Mountain Rescue Team (DWMRT) and the Glenn of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Teams were mobilised at approximately 2pm.

Rescue teams established their base near the Shay Elliot monument from where search & rescue personnel were sent to the location where the injured woman was. The woman, aged in her 60’s received treatment by the mountain rescue medics before being carried on a stretcher to a MR Land Rover to be transferred to an awaiting ambulance from the HSE National Ambulance Service. The woman was brought by ambulance to hospital for further treatment.

The Irish Coast Guard R116 was on stand-by but not called. The rescue operation lasted almost two hours.

Second Incident:

Shorty after 1pm on bank holiday Monday, the Dublin Mountain Rescue Team and the Glen of Imaal Red Cross Mountain Rescue Teams were alerted to an incident in which a hill walker got into difficulty and was suffering breathing difficulties.

The call for help was received by staff at the National Parks and Wildlife Service, however, due to poor and restricted mobile phone signal, the caller’s exact location was unclear.

Based on the information received, mountain rescue teams initially investigated areas around Glenmacnass Valley before moving onto Poulanass Waterfall where they located the male casualty and brought him to an awaiting ambulance from the HSE NAS where he was examined by the ambulance crew.

Third incident:

The Irish Coast Guard, National Ambulance Service and the South Eastern Mountain Rescue Team (SEMRT) were all involved in an operation to rescue an injured man off the Blackstairs Mountains on the Carlow/Kilkenny/Wexford border last night (Monday 28th April).

It is understood a male suffered leg injuries while walking the mountain. The casualty was transferred to hospital from the mountain by the IRCG Rescue 117 with assistance from the ground by the South Eastern MRT.
