One man has died following a collision in County Offaly. It is understood the car in which he was travelling in left the road and overturned before ending up in a flooded field.

The collision occurred on the Tarraun road, Pollagh close to the Grand Canal, however, it’s not yet clear what time the incident may have happened, but Gardai say it may have occurred overnight.

Two units of Offaly Fire & Rescue Service from Clara (OY13) and Ferbane (OY16) fire stations attended with three ambulances from the National Ambulance Service. An eyewitness said ‘Fire and Ambulance personnel worked frantically to try and save him at the scene’.

The Air Corps 122 helicopter also responded to the incident.
The injured man was taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore where he was later pronounced dead.
