‘Unnecessary and illegal fires take the brigades protection away from the population of West Cork’ fear by Senior Fire Officers in Cork fear.
Cork County Fire Service has dealt with over seventy call-outs to gorse fires in the past week all over West Cork.
Many of the areas affected were concentrated in Borlin, Cousane, Ballybawn, Cool Mountain, Mount Gabrel, Goleen, Glangarriff, Eyeries, Kilctherne and Drunmanus.
A significant amount of gorse fires also took place at the Sheeps Head Pennisula in the Durrus, Kilcrohane and Ahakista areas last Saturday and Sunday.
Fire crews from Bantry, Schull and Skibereen fire stations assisted with the evacuation of over 30 houses from ‘advancing’ gorse fires while they dealt with large fires on the Sheeps Head.
During this time, fire crews returning to their stations from the gorse fires were diverted to a house fire in West Cork. Cork County Fire Service has said fire crews arrived on the scene quickly and brought he fire under control. There were no reports of any injuries.
The Fire Authority has said ‘these unnecessary and illegal fires take the brigades protection away from the population centres of West Cork’.
