Fire Crews save Ambulance Station in Toxic Industrial Blaze

Six Units of Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service have prevented a fire in an industrial unit from spreading to adjoining premises, including the Alton Ambulance base station of the South Central Ambulance Service.

More than 30 firefighters spent the early hours of this morning and much of today battling the fire which broke out at around 4.55am at the Newman Industrial Estate in Alton.

Hampshire Fire & Rescue Service received reports that there were a number of toxic chemicals inside the unit where the fire started. Fire crews from Alton, Basingstoke, Bordon, Odiham and Rushmoor fire stations were alerted to the blaze and quickly managed to contain the fire and prevented it from spreading.

The brigade’s Command Support Unit from Rushmoor Fire Station and the Hazardous Area Response Team of the South Central Ambulance Service were also mobilised. Police Officers visited local residents and advised them to stay indoors and close their doors and windows.

Station Commander Craig Gregory is the Officer in Charge of the incident. He said “Crews on scene did a fantastic job in quickly tackling the fire, containing it, and stopping it from spreading to neighbouring units including an ambulance station. We had hazardous materials officers from both Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service and Hampshire Police on scene to determine the chemicals inside the unit. The chemicals were that of toxic nature, believed to have been pesticides, and so every precaution has been taken to take care of firefighters on scene and local residents.”

Crews will remain on scene dampening down and there will now be a joint investigation with Hampshire Police to determine the cause of the fire.
