A man had died after he fell off rocks and into the sea at Fanad Lighthouse, off the coast of Donegal. The man, believed to be from Co. Antrim was taking photographs at the time and slipped. It is understood he became trapped in a gully at the bottom of the cliffs.
Emergency services were alerted and a rescue operation was launched. Two RNLI Lifeboats from Lough Swilly, the Mulroy Coastguard and the Irish Coast Guard helicopter from Sligo were involved in the rescue. Two fishing boats in the area also assisted.
It is understood the rescue boats could not gain access to the casualty because of a Force 7-8 gale blowing north-westerly towards the shore. The rescue team managed to keep a visual on the man throughout the rescue but could not determine his injuries.
The Mulroy Coastguard boat eventually managed to extract the casualty and took him to shore where rescuers carried out CPR on him. The man was then taken by the rescue helicopter removed him to Letterkenny General Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
