Assistant Garda Commissioner Derek Byrne is set to resign from An Garda Síochána and take up a high profile position as police commissioner in the Cayman Islands.
Operating in his role as Assistant Commissioner for the past eight years, Mr. Byrne is regarded as one of the force’s most experienced officers and was instrumental in the overhaul of specialist units dealing with organised crime in Ireland.
It is feared the departure of AC Byrne will be a major blow to Garda management.
Ass. Commissioner Derek Byrne is expected to leave An Garda Síochána later this year and take up the position of commissioner of police in the Cayman Islands, after being offered the post following a lengthy recruitment campaign. Mr Byrne was previously short-listed for the position of the PSNI’s chief constable and also for the post of Executive Director of Interpol.
Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan was notified on Friday of Mr. Byrnes intention to resign.
