An Garda Síochána has issued a statement which reveals that due to a technical error, 196 probationer Gardaí were overpaid over a period of months.
The error was made at the Department of Public Expenditure & Reform’s Payroll Shared Services Centre. For 97, this amounted to an overpayment of €487 each. For 99, this amounted to an overpayment of €221 each.
So far, none of this overpayment has been taken back from the probationer Gardaí.
Garda management has contacted all the probationer Gardaí today to inform them of this error and for arrangements to be made with each individual for this overpayment to be managed. The GRA has also been communicated with them on the matter.
The issue was identified by an audit in late October 2016. Garda management only became aware of the issue late last night and gardaí say they moved as quickly as possible to clarify the situation.
